Martha's Vineyard "stuffies", aka stuffed quahogs, have become a regular staple of our diet since we began spending our winters here. The color inside their shells is entrancing, and has inspired me to try to replicate them in the yarn that I dye, and as you look through "Our Store" you will find a few hand knit items for sale as part of my new "MV Quahog Collection". This is one of the softest yarns I have worked with. It is 100% alpaca that is under 20 microns, so best for the most skin-sensitive projects. Although alpaca is known for its tensile strength, this fingering weight yarn is definitely NOT suited as a sock yarn. Afghan Pakul
When I traveled with my family to Afghanistan back in 1976 (Dad was teaching at Jamhuriat Hospital in Kabul), I admired the Pakul, a traditional wool hat worn by Afghan mountain men. I found a knitting pattern in Folk Hats by Vicki Square, and used two strands of Natural Fiber Producers Superfine Luxury, then washed and machine-dried to felt it up a bit. "Swing Knitting" Tote
Several years ago at a yarn trade show, I learned about "swing knitting". Using short rows and garter stitch, all sorts of swirly designs may be created, giving the finished piece a stained glass effect. Ragg Tyme Sock Yarn
It has been a long time coming — many years in fact — but Natural Fiber Producers’ Ragg Tyme Sock Yarn is finally here! Gladiolus Ragg (orange), Maple Leaf Ragg (red), Heliotrope Bouquet (purple), and Ragg Time Dance (blue) are 3-ply fingering weight yarns with 20 wraps per inch.
